How to use a lathe to machine keyways

In most small machinery factories or mechanical maintenance departments, lathes are indispensable equipment. This article introduces a method of using a lathe to process keyways.

This machining method mainly solves the problem of cutting tools. This tool is a combination of cutting tool and boring tool. Since the manual slide box is used to make the cutting movement of the tool in the process of machining the keyway, the cutting speed of the tool cannot be high, and the force of the tool is relatively large. The rake angle g0 and the back angle a0 of the tool are also relatively small, which is generally controlled. Within 5°, the material of the tool must be high-speed steel. The installation of the tool ensures that the midpoint of the cutting edge of the tool is aligned with the center of the workpiece by adjusting the thickness of the pad, thereby ensuring the symmetry of the processed keyway and the center of the hole. According to the hardness of the material, the size of the tool feed is completed by turning the handle of the large carriage by hand, generally controlled at about 0.1mm/time.

Using this method to process the keyway, the workpiece clamping is very easy, which can be realized by using an ordinary three-jaw chuck, and the installation and adjustment of the tool is also relatively simple. Only the cutting time is slightly longer. Generally, it takes about 15 minutes to process a keyway. This method is particularly suitable for single-piece repair processing, especially for processing blind hole keyways, which is easier to control.
