Stud welding technology and principle
The method of welding studs or similar metal pillars and other fasteners on the workpiece is called stud welding. There are many ways to realize stud welding: resistance welding, friction welding, explosive welding and arc welding. At present, the most widely used method is arc stud welding, which can be subdivided into energy storage (capacitor discharge) stud welding and drawn arc stud welding according to different welding power sources.

Energy storage stud welding provides the energy required for welding by the discharge of a charged capacitor. When the capacitor is discharged, an arc appears between the stud and the workpiece for a short time, and the arc will melt a small amount of metal on the surface of the workpiece and the top of the stud Then, the stud is immersed in the molten pool, and the molten metal is rapidly cooled to form a welded joint. The welding time of energy storage stud welding is extremely short, usually within 5ms, without shielding gas; the molten pool is shallow, about 0.1mm, and there is no deformation or indentation on the back of the workpiece, suitable for thin plate welding; can be used for welding carbon steel , Stainless steel, aluminum, copper and its alloys; the ratio of plate thickness to stud diameter can reach 1:10.
Energy storage type stud welding equipment can be divided into contact type and gap type according to the configuration of the welding gun.
Contact stud welding relies on the built-in spring of the welding gun to compress the stud. The distance between the workpiece and the stud is ensured by the small boss on the top of the stud. When the capacitor is discharged, the small boss quickly vaporizes, and the stud and An arc appears between the workpieces, and the heat generated by the arc causes a molten layer to form on the top of the stud, and a very shallow molten pool is formed on the surface of the workpiece. Under the pressure of the built-in spring of the welding gun, the stud quickly sinks. Within 3 to 4 ms, the stud is immersed in the molten pool, the arc disappears, and the molten pool cools rapidly to form a welded joint.
