The motor housing protects the motor from pollutants in its operating environment. In addition, the type of motor housing affects the cooling of the motor. Motor housings are divided into open or fully enclosed types, and there are different types of housings in each category. Open Drip Prevention (ODP) The open motor housing allows cold air to flow through the motor. The rotor has fan blades to help air pass through the motor. One type of open enclosure is the ODP enclosure. In the ODP housing, the vents prevent liquids and solids from entering the motor from the vertical at an angle of up to 15 ° from above and damaging the operating components. When the motor is not in a horizontal position, such as when the motor is installed on a wall, a special cover may be required to protect it. When the environment is free of pollutants and wind and rain are not considered, the ODP enclosure can be specified. Fully enclosed non-ventilated (TENV) Sometimes, the air around the motor contains corrosive elements, dust, sand, and other debris that may damage the internal components of the motor, or the motor is exposed to wind-driven rain or seawater spray. The completely enclosed motor housing is not airtight, but it limits the free air exchange between the inside and outside of the motor. The seal where the shaft passes through the housing prevents water, dust, and other foreign objects that may enter the motor along the shaft. The absence of vents means that all heat is dissipated through the enclosure by conduction. Most TENV motors are fractional horsepower in size, and TENV motors can be used indoors and outdoors. Totally enclosed fan cooling (TEFC) The completely enclosed fan cooling enclosure is similar to the TENV enclosure, except that the external fan is installed on the opposite side of the motor drive end. The fan provides additional cooling by blowing air outside the motor to dissipate heat faster. The guard covers the fan to prevent anyone from touching it. With this arrangement, no outside air enters the interior of the motor. TEFC motors can be used in dirty, humid, or slightly corrosive operating conditions, or where wind and rain are expected.
